Broadband has become a crucial aspect of daily life, supporting activities like streaming entertainment, remote work, home security through internet-connected cameras, and managing smart devices such as lighting and heating. As households increasingly incorporate internet-connected devices and rely on online content streaming, the demand for fast and reliable broadband access is growing. However, not all internet service providers (ISPs) are delivering the same level of performance.
According to SpeedGo, a new broadband speed-testing service, Virgin Media leads in the UK with an impressive average download speed of 256.5Mbps. This speed allows users to download a full HD movie in just over two minutes, significantly faster than the national average. Vodafone follows in second place with average download speeds of 175Mbps, with BT (EE) ranking third. On the other end of the spectrum, TalkTalk lags behind with an average speed of under 95Mbps.
The rankings for average download speeds among popular UK ISPs are as follows:
– Virgin Media: 256.5Mbps
– Vodafone: 175.1Mbps
– BT (EE): 122.5Mbps
– Sky Broadband: 113.6Mbps
– TalkTalk: 94.7Mbps
In addition to download speeds, SpeedGo also examined upload speeds, which are crucial for users handling large files or working remotely. Vodafone stood out in this category with an average upload speed of 83.6Mbps, surpassing Virgin Media, which ranked second with 47.2Mbps.
SpeedGo affirmed these results, noting that in 2025, Virgin Media offered the fastest broadband internet in the United Kingdom with an average download speed of 256.5Mbps. Vodafone achieved the highest average upload speed at 83.6Mbps.
