Prince Andrew has spent a significant £10 million on renovating his Royal Lodge estate despite relinquishing his royal titles. The 65-year-old will continue residing at the property in Windsor even after stepping down as the Duke of York, amidst ongoing allegations that he denies. Renowned royal author Andrew Lownie disclosed that Prince Andrew has invested millions in refurbishing the luxurious residence.
Lownie speculates that Prince Andrew will remain at the estate for the foreseeable future as it serves as a crucial status symbol connected to the monarchy. He noted that while Prince Andrew could choose to vacate the 30-room mansion he has lived in for two decades, indications point towards his intention to stay as long as he can afford to, given his nominal rent and substantial restoration expenses.
In an interview with The Times, Lownie emphasized that the Royal Lodge holds immense significance for Prince Andrew, representing a key status symbol for a man whose identity has long been tied to his royal lineage. The decision to relinquish his titles was made after extensive discussions with the King and Prince of Wales.
This move marks a historic moment, as it is reportedly the first time in over a century that a senior royal has voluntarily ceased using a dukedom. Prince Andrew, in a statement released by Buckingham Palace, expressed that ongoing accusations against him were diverting attention from the royal family’s duties, prompting his decision to forgo his titles and honors.
Despite stepping back from public life years ago, Prince Andrew stressed his commitment to prioritize his family and country. He will retain his title as a prince and his position as eighth in line to the throne, with no impact on his daughters’ royal statuses. However, his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, will revert to her maiden name and lose her courtesy title as a royal divorcee.
Furthermore, Prince Andrew will no longer participate in the traditional royal Christmas celebrations at Sandringham, eliminating his public appearances during the holiday season with the royal family.
