“Which? Study Finds Aldi Reclaims Title as UK’s Most Affordable Supermarket”

Published:

Aldi has regained its position as the most economical supermarket in the UK, according to recent research by consumer group Which?. Last month, a basket of 70 items at Aldi averaged £121.22, edging out Lidl, which was slightly more expensive at £122.35. Tesco, although pricier, offered savings to Clubcard members, with an average expenditure of £133.65 compared to £136.20.

On the other end of the spectrum, Waitrose emerged as the priciest option, averaging £166.79 for the same items. Opting to shop entirely at Aldi or Waitrose could result in savings exceeding £45 for a family.

Which? conducts this comparison monthly across eight supermarket chains, including both own-label and branded products like Birds Eye peas and Hovis bread.

In a larger selection of 183 groceries, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their limited branded offerings, Asda emerged as the cheapest option with an average cost of £455.52 last month. Asda is focusing on price reductions to regain market share lost to competitors, including discount stores.

For the bigger shopping list, Asda was £9.71 cheaper than Tesco for the same items with Clubcard discounts. Waitrose, on the other hand, was the most expensive at £522.91, significantly pricier than Asda.

Reena Sewraz, Which? retail editor, highlighted that while Aldi is the cheapest this month, both Aldi and Lidl remain excellent money-saving choices. Asda continues to be one of the most cost-effective supermarkets, offering a wide range of branded goods. With the approaching holiday season, where food prices are a concern, it’s advisable to compare prices as the savings from choosing one supermarket over another can be significant, potentially up to 27%.
