“Former Tennis Pro Nicolas Kicker Withdraws Mid-Match”

Published:

Nicolas Kicker chose to withdraw from his quarter-final match against Gustavo Heide at an ATP Challenger Tour event in Florianopolis, Brazil, while facing a critical moment in the match. Kicker, who had lost the first set 6-2 and was trailing 5-1 in the second set, decided to end the match.

During the seventh game, with the score tied at deuce, Heide gained an advantage. Instead of contesting the match point, Kicker opted to end the match by shaking hands with the chair umpire and his opponent.

Kicker, a 33-year-old former world No.78 tennis player, holds the unfortunate distinction of being the highest-ranked professional player ever found guilty of match-fixing. In 2018, he received a six-year ban for his involvement in manipulating the outcomes of two separate Challenger tournament matches in 2015.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) reduced his suspension by three years, under the condition of no further violations, and later shortened it by four months after an appeal, as he cooperated with the agency’s educational initiatives.

Kicker collaborated with ITIA to create an educational video detailing his involvement in corruption and cautioning other players about the consequences. In the video, he expressed regret over his actions and the impact they had on his promising career.

Admitting to a vulnerable financial situation, Kicker shared a troubling experience where he was approached on Facebook by individuals offering financial support but later revealed themselves as match-fixing syndicates demanding his participation in throwing matches.

Kicker describes the experience of intentionally losing matches as “horrible” and acknowledges the lasting damage to his reputation within the tennis community.
