Elderly Woman Found Dead on Australian Island

Published:

An elderly woman, aged 80, was discovered deceased on a secluded island in Australia after she failed to reboard her cruise ship. The woman, who was on a trek near the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland, went missing during an excursion. Her body was located on a mountain a day later, following an alert raised by the vessel’s staff. Authorities have stated that they do not consider the woman’s death to be suspicious.

A comprehensive search was initiated by sea and land before the woman’s body was located. She was part of a luxury voyage aboard the Coral Adventurer cruise ship and went missing while exploring the surroundings. The woman was participating in a 60-day journey around Australia, an expedition valued at approximately $80,000 (£39,000).

Mark Fifield, the head of Coral Expeditions, confirmed the “tragic death” of the passenger on Lizard Island in an official statement. The company is collaborating with law enforcement to assist in the ongoing investigation.

Fifield stated, “The crew alerted authorities about the missing woman, prompting a search and rescue operation by land and sea. After the operation, Queensland Police informed Coral Expeditions that the woman was discovered deceased on Lizard Island.”

He added, “While inquiries into the incident are ongoing, we express our deepest sympathies for this event and are providing full support to the woman’s family. Our team is in contact with the family and will continue to offer assistance during this challenging period. We are in close coordination with Queensland Police and other relevant authorities to aid in their investigation. Further comments are withheld pending the completion of this process.” Police have confirmed that they are preparing a report for the coroner.

According to a source cited by The Australian, the woman was part of a group hiking the steep Cook’s Look trail on the island on Saturday afternoon when she needed to pause. Allegedly, the group proceeded without her.

Robyn Holmes, the Mayor of Cook Shire, expressed condolences to the woman’s family, friends, and all those impacted by the incident. She acknowledged the distressing nature of the situation and commended the efforts of emergency service personnel and involved agencies.
