“Iceland Manifesto Addresses Concerns on Rising Cost of Living”

Published:

Chatting with individuals in various communities reveals a shared concern about the rising cost of living. This issue has always been significant to me, whether advocating for more affordable infant formula or assisting families in avoiding predatory lending practices.

In the past year, I had the opportunity to travel extensively across the country, engaging with our dedicated Iceland team and the millions of customers we serve weekly. Our observations culminated in the ‘Iceland Manifesto,’ released just before the previous year’s election.

Our interactions highlighted a sense of disenfranchisement among the public, coupled with ongoing struggles related to the affordability of essential needs like childcare, veterinary expenses, heating, and food. These worries persist, emphasizing the urgent need for action as the cost of living continues to dominate people’s daily concerns.

Assuming the role of a Labour peer serves a specific purpose – to bring practical insights from the high street to Westminster, amplifying the voices of businesses and communities nationwide. The depth of expertise and quality of debates in the House of Lords have always impressed me.

Being able to contribute my experiences as a retailer and entrepreneur is a source of pride. I aim to offer a unique perspective, drawing from my involvement in a family business that provides jobs for many and offers millions access to affordable, high-quality food.

Having firsthand experience with the challenges of meeting payroll obligations and understanding the daily struggles families face in putting nutritious meals on the table, I bring a nuanced understanding to the table. Additionally, as an entrepreneur, I appreciate the drive that compels individuals to take risks in pursuit of their visions.

The current Labour Government prioritizes economic growth and pledges to eliminate barriers hindering progress. However, sustainable growth ultimately relies on private enterprise, necessitating confidence in investment and a stable, business-friendly regulatory environment.

I firmly believe that Westminster does not hold all the solutions, but it functions best when individuals with vested interests step forward to communicate candidly. In my new capacity, I am committed to upholding this principle.
