DVLA Issues Warning on Personalized Plates Renewal

Published:

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a caution to individuals with personalized number plates, warning that failure to act promptly could result in a fine of up to £1,000. Responsible for overseeing the registration and licensing of drivers and vehicles in Great Britain, the DVLA manages approximately 53 million driver records and over 47 million vehicle records. Additionally, it administers the collection and enforcement of vehicle excise duty, generating £8.4 billion in 2024/25.

In a bid to monitor vehicles effectively, the DVLA recently utilized social media to alert owners of personalized number plates. The message emphasized the importance of renewing registrations that have not been associated with a vehicle for ten years or more. Renewal is cost-free, and drivers are encouraged to review their documents to ascertain the expiration date. Failure to renew an expired personalized plate could lead to penalties, MOT test failure, and potential loss of the registration number.

Owners of number plates not currently linked to a vehicle are advised to check their V750 certificate. For plates previously assigned but now on retention, individuals must refer to their V778 retention document and renew the registration number via mail. With approximately 45 million personalized number plates in the UK, their popularity is evident. Notably, the most expensive plate, ’25 0′, sold for a staggering £518,000 at auction in 2014, mainly due to its association with renowned Ferrari models.
