“Major Cloud Outages Disrupt Services Worldwide”

Published:

Two major cloud service providers experienced simultaneous outages last night, leading to significant disruptions for users. Amazon’s AWS and Microsoft’s Azure encountered disruptions on Wednesday evening, affecting various key websites and applications such as Microsoft 365, Outlook, Starbucks, and Asda.

Gamers also faced issues with outages reported on Xbox and Minecraft. DownDetector, a platform monitoring online outages, recorded problems throughout the day with services like Office 365, Minecraft, Xbox Live, Copilot, Costco, and Starbucks, among others.

The outage impacted various sectors, with Alaska Airlines noting system problems affecting check-in services. Air New Zealand warned of travel delays due to the inability to process payments or digital boarding passes. Notably, websites for New Zealand’s police and parliament were also affected.

While the outage has since been resolved, a prolonged disruption was observed in Azure services. However, Microsoft reported no active incidents on their dashboard as of Wednesday evening, indicating progress in resolving the issue.

Microsoft assured users that they were actively working on fixing the Azure problem and expected full mitigation by a specific time. The company mentioned significant improvements in affected regions and stated they would communicate any earlier mitigation achievements.

As the recovery process continues, some websites are gradually coming back online. Notably, Microsoft highlighted ongoing efforts to address the Azure disruption, emphasizing the importance of the platform for various services and websites.

The outage’s impact extended to several major companies, including disruptions in web services and applications. Heathrow Airport and Natwest also faced website issues during the global internet outage, affecting customer services and operations.

Microsoft attributed the Azure disruption to an inadvertent configuration change and detailed the steps taken to resolve the issue. The company assured customers of ongoing mitigation efforts and provided regular updates on the progress.

In a similar incident to Amazon Web Services (AWS) last week, the Azure outage highlighted the vulnerabilities of relying on a few major cloud service providers. The outage underscored the potential risks associated with consolidation in the cloud services industry.

Overall, the recent outages emphasized the critical role of cloud platforms like Azure and AWS in supporting various online services and businesses, underscoring the need for robust infrastructure and contingency plans.
