“Newborn Found Abandoned at NYC Train Station”

Published:

A newborn infant, with its umbilical cord still attached, was discovered abandoned at a busy New York City train station during peak hours. The baby, wrapped in a blanket, was found at the base of a staircase leading to a train platform at Penn Station on a Monday morning. Emergency services quickly responded to an anonymous tip reporting the abandonment and transported the infant to a nearby hospital.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) stated that the baby was alert and conscious upon discovery and her condition was deemed stable upon arrival at Bellevue Hospital. Authorities have not made any arrests yet, and investigations are ongoing, as reported by US media sources.

The New York Post revealed that the NYPD is currently reviewing surveillance footage to identify the individual responsible for leaving the baby at the subway station. No details about the person who abandoned the infant have been released to the public.

Describing the incident as the ‘Miracle on 34th Street’, New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow recounted the discovery of the unattended baby at the 34th Street station by the FDNY and police department responders.

According to New York State’s Abandoned Infant Protection Act, a parent can relinquish a newborn infant up to 20 days old without facing prosecution, provided that the child is abandoned safely at an appropriate location such as a hospital, staffed police station, or fire station.

In a similar event last month, a newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a cardboard box on the roadside in Tuguegarao City, Philippines. Social worker May Asuncion mentioned that the baby was in stable condition but would be monitored at the hospital for up to five days for her well-being.

Chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. commended the prompt response of local citizens and authorities, emphasizing the value of every life and the commitment to identifying the individual who abandoned the child, as per the official statement from the Philippine National Police.

A police spokesperson echoed the sentiment, thanking the citizens for their swift action that saved the baby’s life and urging anyone with relevant information to step forward to ensure justice is served and the infant receives the necessary care.
