The government has issued a warning to households, highlighting the heightened risk of cyber attacks during the post-Christmas period. With the influx of ‘smart’ devices received as gifts, alongside the multitude of internet-connected electrical items already present in UK homes, including smart speakers, fitness trackers, security cameras, fridges, thermostats, and other appliances, there is a growing concern over the security vulnerabilities these devices may pose.
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a division of GCHQ, has raised alarms about the potential risks associated with insecure devices, which could allow malicious individuals to infiltrate a household’s network or carry out cyber attacks. Recent analysis revealed that connected homes face an average of 10 attacks every 24 hours, with security measures successfully averting approximately 1,736 threats per minute.
In response to these threats, the government is urging households to take proactive steps to safeguard their devices. They recommend setting up two-step verification on new accounts and enabling automatic updates, which can be done in just five minutes. Baroness Lloyd, the Cyber Security Minister, emphasized the importance of securing smart devices to ensure families can enjoy the benefits of these technologies while maintaining peace of mind.
Jonathon Ellison, NCSC’s director for national resilience, stressed the significance of implementing robust security measures when setting up new smart devices. Encouraging individuals to prioritize security, he advised following NCSC’s guidelines and activating two-step verification for critical accounts.
The UK government asserts its commitment to protecting families from cyber threats, positioning the country as a global leader in this endeavor. The implementation of Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure regulations mandates that all smart devices sold in the UK meet essential security standards, such as prohibiting default or easily guessable passwords.
As the festive season unfolds, it is crucial for individuals to adhere to security best practices and maintain vigilance in safeguarding their smart devices.
