“Teen Faces Blindness from Rare Parasite in Eye”

Published:

A 19-year-old woman is facing the frightening prospect of losing her eyesight due to a rare parasite that entered her eye when she showered while wearing contact lenses.

Grace Jamison, who shared her experience on social media, was diagnosed with acanthamoeba keratitis in August. This condition is caused by tiny amoebas that infiltrate the cornea and is commonly found in water sources like lakes, wells, shower water, as well as in dust and dirt.

Although anyone can contract this infection, contact lens wearers are especially vulnerable if proper hygiene practices are not followed.

In a TikTok video viewed over six million times, Grace revealed that she contracted the infection while showering with her contacts in the Dominican Republic, where the water was contaminated with acanthamoeba. She also warned that swimming or sleeping with lenses can lead to the same infection.

Treatment for acanthamoeba keratitis is intense and painful. Grace now has to use medicated eye drops every thirty minutes to an hour, some of which contain pool disinfectant and other chemicals to eradicate the parasite.

The treatment is estimated to continue for six months to a year, with additional procedures needed to address the scarring and damage caused by the parasite.

Describing the symptoms as severe, Grace mentioned excruciating eye and head pain, potential blindness, and vision cloudiness, making daily life extremely challenging.

Despite the hardships, Grace is leveraging her ordeal to raise awareness about contact lens safety. She emphasized the importance of simple precautions like washing hands before handling contacts, regularly changing solution, and refraining from sleeping, swimming, or showering with lenses.

Her aim in sharing her story is to highlight how easily vision can be compromised and to remind people of the value and significance of sight.
