A significant transition in phone communication is on the horizon for the UK, urging homeowners to take action promptly. The traditional copper landlines that have been the backbone of connectivity for years are being phased out to make way for a new technology known as Digital Voice, utilizing broadband for calls.
This upgrade not only aligns with modern requirements but also enhances reliability and introduces new functionalities like improved call clarity, call forwarding to mobile phones, and enhanced call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing calls.
The rollout of this major transformation is scheduled for January 2027, prompting BT to launch an awareness campaign, led by Clare Balding, under the theme ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch’. The campaign encourages households to assess their landline setups and ensure readiness for the digital era.
Coinciding with this initiative is recent research revealing that many Brits tend to procrastinate essential tasks, assuming that operational status implies no immediate need for action.
Clare Balding emphasized the crucial nature of responding to provider communications promptly to ensure uninterrupted landline services. BT assures customers that number retention and pricing stability are expected during the transition, with no anticipated cost increases. Most households can seamlessly transition by connecting their current phones to broadband hubs rather than the traditional wall sockets.
In cases where issues arise, contacting the service provider for assistance may be necessary. Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, emphasized the importance of heeding messages from service providers to avoid disruptions to essential connections during the transition to digital landlines.
BT also advises customers with special needs, such as users of telecare devices, to notify their providers promptly for tailored support arrangements.
Digital Voice, BT’s innovative home phone service, operates on broadband technology, offering advanced features like Multi Call, three-way calling, and call diversion to mobile numbers. The service promises improved call quality and eliminates common issues like crackling conversations, requiring a compatible Digital Home phone for optimal performance.
Transitioning to Digital Voice is expected to have minimal impact on most households, as the service is bundled with broadband at no additional cost. The package price encompasses the new service, ensuring a seamless upgrade experience for users.
