Wes Streeting has condemned Baroness Mone for having to be taken to court to refund millions owed to taxpayers for substandard PPE. The Health Secretary intensifies pressure on the disgraced peer, reiterating the demand for repayment of the substantial bill.
Implying strategic maneuvers in recovering the owed funds from PPE Medpro, Mr. Streeting is cautious not to disclose specifics to prevent Baroness Mone’s legal team from gaining an advantage.
Addressing a caller on LBC regarding the outstanding money, Mr. Streeting emphasized the pursuit of repayment while guarding against revealing details that could aid Baroness Mone’s legal defense. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, stressing that defrauding taxpayers is intolerable, especially for a member of the House of Lords like Baroness Mone.
PPE Medpro, led by Baroness Mone’s husband Doug Barrowman, faced legal action from the Department of Health and Social Care for supplying 25 million defective gowns during the pandemic. The Mirror recently reported the company’s insolvency, leaving a £39 million debt to the tax authorities.
Additionally, a substantial sum of £148 million in damages, costs, and interest is owed to the DHSC following a legal battle over non-sterile gowns. Baroness Mone, renowned for establishing Ultimo lingerie, and Mr. Barrowman, residing in the tax haven of the Isle of Man, reportedly profited £65 million from PPE deals secured after lobbying the government.
The couple and their company are under investigation by the National Crime Agency, although they have denied any wrongdoing. Grosvenor Law, representing Baroness Mone, criticized public statements made by officials, noting that their clients are innocent and confident that the truth will prevail.
