“From Biomedical Engineering to Cowgirl Dreams: Embracing Unconventional Success”

Published:

Growing up, I was raised to believe in a conventional path to success: attend university, secure a job in your field, get married, purchase a home, and start a family. This was the same roadmap passed down from my parents to me and my sister, and reiterated by the high school guidance counselor as the key to a fulfilling life. Following this trajectory, in 2016, I was completing my second year studying biomedical engineering at the University of Guelph.

After unsuccessfully applying for engineering jobs in Ontario, I unexpectedly landed a position at a horseback trail riding establishment in Banff National Park. While this deviated from my planned route to success, my childhood experience riding horses on our family farm in southern Ontario gave me confidence in excelling at this job.

In Banff, I had the opportunity to fulfill my childhood dream of riding in the mountains, guiding guests through picturesque landscapes, driving horse teams along the Bow River, and leading visitors to meadows teeming with wildlife. This experience made me realize that a fulfilling life doesn’t necessarily mean a traditional desk job but can be found in appreciating simple moments and being grateful for the beauty that surrounds us.

Working seasonally also introduced me to a diverse group of individuals who shared their unique perspectives on life with me. These friendships, forged during intense months of working together, have had a lasting impact on me, unlike any connections I made in school or my current desk job.

While the goodbyes at the end of each season were difficult, the friendships and experiences I gained through seasonal work taught me that success can take various forms and that being surrounded by positive influences is paramount. This realization led me to pursue my cowgirl dreams at a ranch in Cranbrook, B.C., despite initial doubts from my family about deviating from my engineering degree.

Today, working in international sales, I continue to travel and explore the world, drawing on the confidence and problem-solving skills honed during my time as a guide. Although my career path may not align with my family’s expectations, I have found fulfillment by following my passions and embracing new opportunities.

Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the changed perspective on success that seasonal work has given me. It has taught me to embrace change, seek new adventures, and enjoy the journey, ultimately shaping the life I love today.
