“Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s $93K Trade Trip to Texas Sparks Controversy”

Published:

During a recent spring trip to Texas, Ontario Premier Doug Ford engaged in trade discussions, with the expenses totaling approximately $93,000, according to records obtained through a freedom of information request. The trip included an advance mission to Texas, costing a total of $93,179. The decision note highlighted efforts to optimize outcomes while minimizing costs, such as securing sponsorships, hosting cost-effective events, and managing staffing efficiently.

Although Ford’s planned meeting with Texas Governor Greg Abbott did not materialize, the premier visited Houston, Dallas, and Austin, meeting primarily with business leaders and companies. Ford’s office defended the trip, emphasizing the longstanding trade relationship between Texas and Ontario, which benefits both regions economically.

Opposition leaders criticized the trip, labeling it a waste of taxpayer money. NDP Leader Marit Stiles questioned the return on investment, while Interim Liberal Leader John Fraser described it as a “dog and pony show,” urging diversification of trade partnerships beyond Texas. Green Party of Ontario Leader Mike Schreiner emphasized the importance of transparent spending practices.

Despite requests for a breakdown of expenses, the premier’s office did not provide detailed cost information. The trip’s focus on trade discussions and potential investment opportunities between Ontario and Texas remains a point of contention among political circles.
