“Man Targeted with Bagpipes in Racist Attack”

Published:

A man in Halifax recounted experiencing a racist outburst on Saturday when another individual deliberately hit his car with bagpipes and hurled racial slurs at him. Shalu Shajan, an immigrant from India, shared with CBC News that the incident took place after he parked his vehicle on Lower Water Street in downtown Halifax.

Following the intentional strike on his car’s side mirror, Shajan confronted the man, who proceeded to hit the trunk of his vehicle. The situation escalated as the man began aggressively shouting racist remarks at Shajan, including telling him to “go back to your country.”

Eyewitness Raven Fox confirmed the heated exchange between the two men, noting the use of racially charged language by the aggressor. Fox added that the man with the bagpipes seemed to purposefully target Shajan’s car, expressing dismay at such behavior in a supposedly welcoming community.

Feeling physically threatened, Shajan considered the altercation might turn violent and opted to call 911. The aggressor walked away towards the waterfront as Shajan documented the incident, later reporting it to Halifax Regional Police and the hate crime unit.

Police acknowledged the report and are investigating whether the incident qualifies as a hate crime, given the racist nature of the altercation. Shajan indicated his willingness to press charges, emphasizing the need to address such behavior to prevent others from enduring similar discrimination.

While incidents targeting South Asian Canadians have risen in recent years, various organizations like the Indo-Canadian Association of Nova Scotia are deeply troubled by such events. The impact of hate crimes extends beyond immediate victims, affecting communities and individuals striving for safety and inclusivity.

Shajan, who decided to share his experience on social media to aid the police investigation, stressed the importance of standing against discrimination to safeguard others from facing similar injustices.
