Madonna, the queen of pop, is making a triumphant return to reclaim her throne. Surpassing Taylor Swift, Madonna has secured the most nominations at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards for the third time in her career. With a total of 11 nominations for the upcoming ceremony, Madonna’s acclaimed album “Confessions II” and its corresponding film have earned her spots in categories such as artist of the year and video of the year.
Taylor Swift, who holds the record for the most awarded solo artist in VMA history, follows Madonna with nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video “The Fate of Ophelia.” Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande are also in the running, each receiving seven nominations.
This isn’t Madonna’s first time leading the pack at the VMAs; she previously dominated the nominations in 1990 and 1998 with her “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras. However, Madonna’s most iconic VMA moment dates back to the inaugural 1984 ceremony, where her provocative performance of “Like a Virgin” pushed the boundaries of cable television.
Among Madonna’s nominations this year are video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for “Bring Your Love,” featuring fellow nominee Carpenter. In the highly contested video of the year category, Madonna’s “Confessions” is in the running against Swift’s “Ophelia,” Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Carpenter’s “Tears,” Bruno Mars’s “I Just Might,” and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s “Storm.”
For fans eager to participate, public voting is open for 13 categories this year. The winners will be revealed during the live broadcast of the September 27 ceremony on CBS, MTV, and Paramount+.
