In the secluded island community of Opitsaht, two RCMP officers responded swiftly to a call involving an assault on a woman. Testifying at a coroner’s inquest into the death of Julian Jones, Cpl. Daniel Macintosh revealed that the fatal shots were fired within five minutes of their arrival.
The inquest aims to examine the circumstances surrounding Jones’s death, with the jury set to make recommendations to prevent similar incidents. Notably, it is not a platform to assign blame or criminal liability.
Const. David Robichaud, the officer who fired the shots that resulted in Jones’s death, was summoned to testify but opted not to appear following his retirement and relocation from the province. Despite an investigation by the Independent Investigations Office, no charges were recommended against the officers involved.
Jones, who had a history of criminal offenses, including assaulting a Tofino RCMP officer, had restrictions in place preventing contact with certain RCMP officers, including Robichaud, as confirmed by his parole officer, David Paruk.
The events at the Opitsaht residence transpired rapidly, with Macintosh recounting a chaotic scene involving the arrest of Jones’s brother, John Lucas Jr., who expressed pain during the handcuffing process.
