“Breathtaking Images of Nature and Research Recognized”

Published:

Two Canadian researchers have been recognized in a global image competition that showcases ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition honored 11 photos taken by researchers worldwide at different career stages. These images capture animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students engaged in ecological research, and various natural landscapes.

Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), won the research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” The image portrays Brennan supervising undergraduate students conducting a fish monitoring project along the coast in St. Andrews, N.B. Brennan highlighted the importance of such images in building public trust in environmental education and ecological research.

Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, won the category “protecting our planet” with his photograph titled “A bridge between past and present.” The photo showcases the Long Sault Parkway in the upper St. Lawrence River, emphasizing the impact of human activities on ecosystems.

Photographers stress that images play a crucial role in fostering a connection with nature and raising awareness about environmental conservation. These visual representations not only document scientific work but also serve as powerful tools for communication. Brennan’s image captures the curiosity of students during a fish monitoring project, while Tian’s photo illustrates the transformation of the Long Sault Parkway over time.

The competition also recognized other outstanding entries, such as “Window to the Wetlands” by Sritam Kumar Sethy and “A space for frogs” by Ryan Wagner. The diverse range of images reflects the beauty of nature and the importance of preserving ecosystems worldwide. Through photography, researchers aim to inspire a deeper appreciation for the natural world and encourage action towards conservation efforts.

Overall, the BMC image competition celebrates the intersection of science and art, showcasing the beauty and significance of ecological research through captivating visuals. The winning photographs offer a glimpse into the intricate relationship between humans, wildlife, and the environment, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and conservation initiatives.
