Jannik Sinner Withdraws from U.S. Open Due to Knee Injury

Top-ranked player Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the U.S. Open due to a lingering right knee injury sustained after his Wimbledon victory. Despite winning back-to-back titles at the All England Club, Sinner had to skip the Montreal and Cincinnati tournaments, essential preludes to the U.S. Open, to focus on his recovery. The 25-year-old Italian confirmed his withdrawal in a statement, expressing disappointment at not being able to participate in this year’s tournament.

Sinner shared, “Despite my efforts with my team and medical staff, I regret to announce that I will not be able to compete at the US Open. After returning to training in Monte Carlo, it became evident that more time is needed to heal my right knee. I am deeply saddened as New York holds a special place in my heart, and I was eagerly anticipating the vibrant atmosphere and support from the fans.”

The reigning 2024 U.S. Open champion, Sinner faced defeat in last year’s final against Carlos Alcaraz, who announced his readiness to return to action in New York following a wrist injury hiatus since April. The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has been a focal point in men’s tennis, culminating in their recent duels in the 2025 Grand Slam finals, with Alcaraz clinching the latest encounter in New York.

Sinner’s record-breaking year includes six titles and a 44-3 win-loss ratio. Despite his dominant performance, he experienced a setback at the French Open, surrendering a two-set lead in a grueling match against Juan Manuel Cerundolo. The Wimbledon victory marked Sinner’s fifth Grand Slam title, but his absence from the U.S. Open this year will be his first missed major since his debut at the tournament in 2019.
