“Miyu Yamashita Seizes Victory at CPKC Women’s Open”

Published:

Miyu Yamashita, a 25-year-old Japanese golfer, clinched victory at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton, marking her first successful outing in Canada. Yamashita secured her fourth LPGA Tour win and second of the year after a dominant display at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club. Her impressive 4-under-par 66 final round propelled her to finish at 23 under in the $2.75-million US tournament, claiming a nine-stroke victory over her compatriot Yuri Yoshida, who finished at 14 under.

Expressing her joy, Yamashita stated, “I’m really happy to win in Canada. A lot of people came out to support me, and I was able to enjoy playing throughout the week.” Standing at just four-foot-11, Yamashita’s achievement in Edmonton tied the lowest all-time score on the LPGA Tour over four days, matching the 257 mark. This also made her the fastest Japanese player to reach four LPGA wins.

Anna Huang from Vancouver emerged as the top Canadian, finishing tied for fourth with a 5-under 65, while Calgary’s Aphrodite Deng secured a tied seventh spot with an 11-under total, being the low amateur for the second consecutive year. Two-time winner Brooke Henderson finished tied for 13th at 7 under, acknowledging the strong Canadian presence on the leaderboard and expressing optimism for the future of Canadian golf.

Huang, a 17-year-old golfer, highlighted the significance of playing in front of home crowds and gaining valuable experience. Both Huang and Deng’s top-10 finishes grant them entry into the upcoming LPGA’s FM Championship at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. Additionally, world No. 1 Nelly Korda concluded the tournament at 1 under.

Despite her 14 tour wins, Henderson struggled with the challenging rough and missed birdie opportunities throughout the event. Reflecting on her performance, she remained positive, focusing on building on her strong ball striking for the upcoming tournaments. Amateur Michelle Xing showcased promise, finishing 3 under for the competition, while other Canadian players like Savannah Grewal and Clairey Lin finished 3 over and Maude-Aimee Leblanc ended at 4 over.

The next CPKC Women’s Open is scheduled to take place at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club in Gatineau, Quebec in 2027.
