“Darline Graham Wins SC Republican Primary, Backed by Trump”

Published:

Darline Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, emerged victorious in the Republican primary runoff for the U.S. Senate seat in South Carolina on Tuesday, as per U.S. media forecasts, marking a significant win for U.S. President Donald Trump. Following her brother’s passing on July 11, Graham, who was appointed to fill the Senate seat until the start of January, overcame Representative Ralph Norman in the primary and will now compete in the November election for a full six-year Senate term. Trump publicly endorsed her candidacy and provided substantial financial support through his MAGA INC super PAC, demonstrating his backing for Graham.

During a rally held in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Trump emphasized his support for Graham, declaring, “I am on the ballot,” underscoring his investment in her campaign. The 62-year-old Graham is set to face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, in the upcoming general election. Given South Carolina’s deeply conservative stance, Graham is expected to secure an easy victory in the state. This primary runoff served as a litmus test for Trump’s influence on voters in the lead-up to this year’s midterm elections, where he aims to prevent the Democrats from gaining control of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate from the Republican party.

Despite Trump’s endorsements during this election cycle, his support has been met with mixed results, with polls indicating that issues like soaring consumer prices and an unpopular conflict with Iran have weighed on his influence. Notably, Trump’s MAGA INC. allocated $827,711 US to support Graham, as reported in its filing with the U.S. Federal Election Commission on Monday, signifying a rare instance of direct financial backing from the president towards a preferred candidate.

Graham seized the opportunity during Friday’s rally to address a previous misstep in a debate where she admitted a lack of expertise in national security matters, an area that was pivotal in her brother’s tenure in the Senate. Acknowledging her lapse, Graham sought to redirect the focus by emphasizing her stance on domestic affairs, particularly highlighting Trump’s immigration policies and anti-abortion advocacy. Prior to her Senate appointment, Graham’s professional background revolved around advocating for individuals with physical disabilities, without prior experience in public office.

South Carolina, known for favoring Trump in all his presidential campaigns, is anticipated to remain a stronghold for the incumbent president and is unlikely to significantly impact the overall congressional control battle. On the opposing front, Norman, a 73-year-old real estate developer with almost a decade of experience in the U.S. House, faced defeat in the primary following an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid.
