Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Dylan Cease, known for his prowess on the mound, has showcased his artistic talent at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Despite not pursuing art in high school, Cease’s painting, a tribute to Toronto displayed in Walker Court, has become part of a limited edition retail collection at the AGO shop. This collection includes prints, postcards, clothing, and bags, with proceeds supporting the AGO’s charitable endeavors.
Speaking about his artwork, Cease humbly acknowledged his lack of formal art training, having focused on theatre during his school days. He shared that his teachers might have had criticisms of his work but expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the art world.
During the event, children from summer camps were invited to listen to Cease discuss his artistic process while Blue Jays fans eagerly lined up outside the gallery. Cease, overwhelmed by the turnout, expressed astonishment at the reception of his artwork, emphasizing that he never anticipated such a positive response.
Cease, who only started painting in 2022, has previously created artwork for charitable causes and his teammates. His Toronto-themed piece now proudly hangs in Blue Jays manager John Schneider’s office. Reflecting on his inspiration for the painting, Cease shared his excitement about potentially spending a significant part of his career in Toronto after signing a lucrative contract with the Blue Jays.
Despite his newfound passion for painting, Cease remains focused on his baseball career, aiming to explore oil painting in the future. He emphasized the therapeutic nature of art, contrasting it with the intensity of professional sports, and highlighted the joy it brings him.
In conclusion, Cease emphasized that regardless of where his artwork ends up, whether in a gallery or his own home, the process of creating art brings him immense satisfaction and serves as a valuable outlet for self-expression.
