“Canada Launches National AI Literacy Initiative”

Published:

The Canadian government is taking steps to enhance public understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) through the launch of the National AI Literacy Initiative. The initiative aims to provide free online courses to post-secondary students, K-12 educators, and the general public to educate them on the fundamentals of AI and its potential impacts.

Minister of Artificial Intelligence Evan Solomon emphasized the importance of education in navigating the era of technological advancements and innovation. He highlighted the government’s commitment to investing in students, teachers, and the overall literacy of Canadians as part of their AI strategy.

The government has allocated $13 million in funding to collaborate with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII) to develop and expand the free courses to reach a wider audience across Canada. Participants can progress through course modules at their own pace, with the post-secondary student course estimated to take about three hours to complete.

The courses, which do not require instructor-led sessions, cater to educators, post-secondary students, and all Canadians. The first two courses, tailored for educators and post-secondary students, will be accessible to educational institutions from September 21. The course for the general public will follow suit later in the year.

According to a government statement, the courses will empower Canadians to utilize AI effectively, question its applications when necessary, and make informed decisions about its integration into their lives. The curriculum emphasizes responsible AI use and the development of essential skills for the workforce.

The course for educators will offer practical training and resources, with additional content to be released progressively. Post-secondary students will gain foundational knowledge in AI, preparing them for the workplace. The third course, Essentials for Canadians, will be accessible through the national Training Finder on Job Bank and community partners.

Minister Solomon highlighted Canada’s historical contributions to AI innovation and expressed the government’s commitment to equipping Canadians with the knowledge and confidence to shape the future of AI.
