The family of renowned Canadian skyrunner and mountaineer Kalie McCrystal, who disappeared on the Matterhorn in the Alps over two weeks ago, has stated that she “remains in the mountains, her cherished domain.” According to her mother and sister, the prevailing information following an extensive search indicates that she had a fall while descending the mountain.
The family expressed gratitude to the search and rescue teams for their dedicated efforts and believes that every possible measure has been taken to locate her. McCrystal was last sighted on September 1 during an attempt to set a mountain-running record in the Alps near the Switzerland-Italy border, ascending the 4,481-meter-high Matterhorn.
The family’s statement acknowledged the global support received from friends and well-wishers who went to great lengths to assist in the search for McCrystal. They expressed disappointment at not finding her, a reality they find challenging to come to terms with.
Describing McCrystal as a remarkable individual who navigated life with a blend of determination and joy, the statement highlighted the void her absence would create in the skyrunning community, Squamish, and beyond. The family takes solace in the knowledge that she was pursuing her passion until her final moments and that she remains amidst the mountains where she found solace.
