Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that Canada will provide $100 million in fresh aid to Palestine to support the potential for a two-state solution. The aid package consists of $80 million for humanitarian assistance and the remaining portion allocated for security development initiatives, including additional funding for a long-term project aimed at training police in the West Bank. Carney revealed this commitment at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Carney emphasized the significant challenges faced by Palestinians in Gaza, highlighting the severe humanitarian crisis they are enduring. He also acknowledged the existential threats that Israelis confront from entities like Hamas and Iran and its allies.
Canada has previously pledged over $600 million in aid to Palestinian civilians following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023. Recent parliamentary documents have revealed the damage inflicted on numerous Canadian-funded aid projects by Israel’s military and settlers.
In collaboration with France and the United Kingdom, Canada announced a joint statement this month to prohibit the import of goods from settlements in the West Bank, citing violence by settlers as a key factor influencing this decision. Carney further criticized Israel’s proposed E1 settlement on Tuesday, which has drawn criticism for its potential to divide the West Bank in half.
