Ceferin Calls for Trust Restoration in Global Football

Published:

European football chief Aleksander Ceferin emphasized the need to mend the fractured trust and unity in the sport following FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s unsuccessful World Cup commercialization proposal. Ceferin, speaking at a gathering in Lisbon, highlighted the importance of restoring trust within the global football community, without directly naming Infantino.

In July, Ceferin spearheaded UEFA’s opposition to Infantino’s plan to sell a significant portion of FIFA’s future commercial rights for $4.2 billion. Despite the swift abandonment of the proposal by Infantino, UEFA expressed intentions to pursue his removal from office and pursue legal action for alleged financial mismanagement.

Ceferin stressed the significance of unity, transparency, and governance that represents the interests of the majority in maintaining trust within the sport. He clarified that he will not contest in the upcoming FIFA election, where Infantino is seeking re-election for a final term through 2031.

FIFA members have until November 18 to nominate candidates for the presidency, with the election scheduled for March in Morocco. Ceferin pointed out that several potential candidates could challenge Infantino, as the football body continues to navigate through the aftermath of the failed commercialization initiative.

Additionally, FIFA’s proposal to create a commercial spinoff, the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), faced opposition from UEFA and other continental bodies, advocating for an alternative approach utilizing FIFA’s substantial cash reserves to benefit member federations directly.

Infantino has responded to criticism by offering an independent review of FIFA’s governance practices and decision-making processes. His efforts to address concerns surrounding FIFA’s operations reflect an attempt to regain trust and credibility within the football community, amidst ongoing scrutiny and calls for transparency.
