“Summerside Sunbank Solar Farm Fire Still Active After Two Weeks”

Published:

The fire at Summerside Sunbank solar farm is still active in its second week, with the possibility of flare-ups and lingering smoke in the vicinity. The City of Summerside mentioned in a recent press release that firefighting crews are present on-site and vigilantly monitoring the situation.

The incident originated at 5:30 a.m. on September 7 when a battery caught fire at the 30-hectare west-end solar facility, which accommodates numerous solar panels. Since the fire’s inception, emergency teams have been continuously stationed at the site.

Deputy Mayor Cory Snow stated on Monday that firefighters are working diligently to contain and supervise the fire within the current array until it extinguishes itself. Snow emphasized that the situation is reliant on the battery burning out entirely.

There is currently no definitive timeline for the fire’s complete burnout; however, Snow expressed optimism that they are closer to the end of the ordeal than the beginning. Residents are urged to adhere to the guidelines issued by the province’s Chief Public Health Office in case of any changes in air quality.

Individuals with smoke sensitivity or underlying respiratory issues are advised to limit outdoor activities as a precautionary measure. Last week, a voluntary shelter-in-place advisory was issued for residents and businesses near the solar farm. City authorities have indicated that unless circumstances alter significantly, the shelter-in-place recommendation is not likely to be reinstated.

Air quality assessments have ceased as per the Chief Public Health Office’s confirmation of having the necessary data. Snow mentioned that any contaminants emitted by the batteries disperse rapidly, posing no ongoing threat to individuals in proximity to the batteries.

The city will continue to closely monitor the situation and update residents with any developments if the situation changes.
