“US and China Agree to Cut Tariffs, Launch AI Talks”

Published:

The recent discussions between the United States and China have resulted in an agreement to decrease tariffs on approximately $30 billion worth of goods, in addition to initiating talks on artificial intelligence (AI). These decisions were made following President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington and were confirmed by both nations.

The tariff reductions will impact various U.S. exports, including agricultural products, wood, and cosmetics, as well as imports such as small appliances, toys, and decorations. According to a statement from the White House, both countries have reached a consensus on providing more favorable tariff treatment for $30 billion worth of non-sensitive goods in each direction.

The meeting between Xi and President Donald Trump, which spanned three days and recently concluded, primarily emphasized personal diplomacy over major public breakthroughs. Xi has since returned to Beijing, as reported by the Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

Additionally, the two sides agreed to establish a trade council and extend the results of previous discussions held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as stated by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. This agreement follows an extension of the trade truce between the world’s largest economies, providing an extra two months beyond the initial deadline of Nov. 10 to work towards a potentially larger trade agreement, according to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed that the visit between the two leaders has positively impacted the stable China-U.S. relationship, marking a new chapter in their ties with global implications for peace and development.

Regarding AI, both nations have agreed to conduct dialogues on the risks and benefits of the technology, with the next round scheduled for November. They also plan to establish a communication channel for AI-related incidents, with the White House specifying the use of the term “super intelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence.”

Furthermore, the two countries will support each other in hosting key international summits, including the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ meeting and the Group of 20 summit. They have also concurred on foreign policy matters, affirming Iran’s commitment to refrain from developing nuclear weapons and opposing the imposition of transit tolls on global waterways by any nation or entity.
