The NFL has taken action by suspending a line judge for two games following an incident where he directed profanity towards Arizona tight end Trey McBride. Line judge Jeff Seeman’s verbal outburst was captured on camera during the Arizona Cardinals’ recent game against the New York Giants. The incident has sparked criticism from JC Tretter, a former offensive lineman and current union leader, who emphasized that such behavior towards players is not acceptable.
The altercation occurred late in the game when officials failed to penalize New York’s Dru Phillips for contact with McBride before a crucial play. Despite the controversy, Arizona ultimately punted, leading to a victory for the Giants with a score of 36-24, sealed by a pick-6 interception by Deonte Banks as time ran out.
In a separate incident, referee Adrian Hill was also suspended for unprofessional conduct during the Miami-Minnesota game. Hill’s actions included shouting at Eric Wilson and gesturing for him to move away after a collision. Minnesota’s head coach, Kevin O’Connell, downplayed the incident as a result of the high-energy atmosphere but expressed confidence in Hill’s officiating abilities.
The suspensions were handed down by the league’s vice-president of officiating, Ramon George. This is not the first instance of an official facing disciplinary action for inappropriate conduct on the field. Notably, Umpire Roy Ellison had faced penalties twice before, including fines and suspensions, for using derogatory language towards players in past incidents.
