Former Convenience Store Worker Strikes Out Ohtani

Published:

Ray Kerr, a former worker at a convenience store and movie theater, emerged as an unexpected hero in the postseason for Atlanta. Kerr delivered a stellar performance by striking out Shohei Ohtani, a four-time MVP, with a 95-mph four-seam fastball in the Braves’ 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. This win leveled the National League Division Series at one game apiece.

Braves manager Walt Weiss praised Kerr’s outstanding pitching, stating, “He did it again for us, just amazing. He’s throwing the ball so well.” Kerr, a 32-year-old left-handed reliever, recorded a season-high-tying four strikeouts, including Ohtani. Despite learning he would start Game 2 on the same day, Kerr remained composed, only allowing two hits and a walk in 2 2/3 innings.

Reflecting on his journey, Kerr revealed that he faced adversity early in life when he entered the foster care system in Reno, Nevada, at the age of 13. Despite these challenges, Kerr persevered, graduating from high school in Reno and briefly playing baseball at Mendocino College before temporarily leaving the sport to work odd jobs.

A pivotal moment came when a coach at Lassen College convinced Kerr to return to baseball. He showcased his talent in the Alaska Baseball League in 2017, leading to a contract with the Seattle Mariners as an undrafted free agent. Kerr’s career saw him traded to the San Diego Padres in 2021 before eventually joining the Atlanta Braves in 2024.

After overcoming a setback with Tommy John surgery in 2025, Kerr made a successful comeback in the current season, earning a spot on Atlanta’s active roster in August. His impressive performance includes a 1.47 ERA over 18 1/3 innings in nine appearances, with left-handed hitters struggling against him.

Looking ahead, the Braves will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3 in Atlanta, with ace pitcher Chris Sale expected to start. Meanwhile, in another game, the Milwaukee Brewers secured a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres, taking a 2-0 lead in the NL Division Series. Jackson Chourio’s clutch two-run single in the ninth inning sealed the win for the Brewers, continuing their strong playoff run.
