“Canada to Extend Ban on Assisted Death for Mental Illness”

Published:

The Justice Minister, Sean Fraser, announced that the federal government plans to introduce legislation in the upcoming fall to extend the prohibition on medically assisted death for individuals solely suffering from mental illness. This decision aligns with the recommendations of a parliamentary committee report released in June and findings from the Justice Department.

Fraser emphasized that Canada has opted not to proceed with expanding medical assistance in dying to cases where mental illness is the sole determining factor. Despite varying perspectives on the matter, the government believes this approach is appropriate for the current circumstances.

The proposed legislation will also enable individuals to provide advance consent for their own medically assisted death if their illness is incurable and leads to unbearable suffering, ultimately compromising their decision-making capacity. The specifics of advance consent will be deliberated in House of Commons committees.

The minister highlighted that this advance consent provision will necessitate stringent criteria, ensuring that individuals meet the necessary conditions for eligibility. Further details on the legislation are expected to emerge as the process unfolds.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
