Alex Ovechkin experienced significant changes over his 22-season career. This transformation was evident during his final home opener, where his sons, Sergei and Ilya, proudly introduced him onto the ice to a standing ovation before the Washington Capitals triumphed over the Pittsburgh Penguins with a score of 5-3 on Wednesday night. The 41-year-old Ovechkin recently declared that this season would be his last.
Reflecting on the touching moment, Ovechkin remarked, “It was a pretty cool moment. Huge crowd, kids announce my name. It was a special moment.”
Despite his remarkable career record of 929 goals, Ovechkin did not add to his tally in this game. He was notably absent during a crucial period when the Penguins had their goalie pulled, marking the 101st encounter between Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby, with both players failing to score a point, a rare occurrence according to Sportradar.
Crosby finished the game with a minus-4 rating after being on the ice for all four of Washington’s even-strength goals. The Capitals showcased their depth by allowing Ovechkin to share power-play responsibilities with his talented teammates, a move appreciated by coach Spencer Carbery.
Ryan Leonard scored Washington’s lone power-play goal from Ovechkin’s usual spot at the left circle. Despite the team’s collective efforts, Ovechkin remained the focal point of the night, being the last player introduced with his children participating in the ceremony.
“I had no idea any of that was happening,” Carbery remarked. “I think they nailed that moment. Special for I think everybody in the building.”
Ovechkin, who registered two shots on goal, witnessed Anthony Beauvillier secure an early 1-0 lead for Washington. Teammate Tom Wilson, who contributed a goal and two assists, acknowledged Ovechkin’s legendary status within the city, expressing the joy felt by everyone witnessing the iconic player’s presence.
