Poilievre Dismisses Musk’s Separatism Call

Published:

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has brushed off tech mogul Elon Musk’s recent suggestions for Quebec, Alberta, and Saskatchewan to break away from Canada, emphasizing that “Canadians shape their own future.” Poilievre expressed his views in Hamilton, stating that attention should be diverted from trivial tweets by individuals lacking influence over Canadian affairs. He urged a shift towards addressing critical issues like the cost of essential items, housing, and the economic trajectory affecting Canadians.

Poilievre highlighted the importance of focusing on tangible challenges confronting Canadians, emphasizing that the decisions made by the country’s populace drive its direction, rather than social media content. Musk’s remarks regarding separatism were prompted by a post mentioning Parti Québécois premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon’s aspirations for Quebec independence, to which Musk responded by advocating for Quebec, Alberta, and Saskatchewan to go their separate ways.

In response to Musk’s comments, Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized during a press conference in Sherbrooke, Quebec, that the destiny of Canada is determined by its citizens and the priorities they hold, including those of Quebec residents. Carney reiterated the government’s commitment to fortifying Quebec and Canada to foster sovereignty and prosperity, enabling Canadians to lead lives aligned with their preferences, culture, and language, free from external interference.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe succinctly rebuffed Musk’s proposition with a straightforward “No.” Musk’s foray into Canadian politics is not new, as he previously used social media to endorse Pierre Poilievre, praising his speeches and media engagements. Musk’s digital activities also included mocking former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau upon his resignation, echoing sentiments from former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Musk’s involvement in endorsing far-right figures, such as the Alternative for Germany (AfD) leader Alice Weidel, in Germany has stirred controversy. Despite criticism, Musk remains supportive of the AfD, even as some members faced backlash for failing to condemn Nazi war crimes.
