A woman from British Columbia has admitted to terrorism-related offenses in a Vancouver court after marrying an ISIS militant. Kimberly Polman pleaded guilty to charges of leaving Canada to support the activities of the terrorist organization ISIS, according to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada.
Polman had been detained in a Syrian camp for multiple years before being repatriated to Canada in 2022 due to her declining health, including hepatitis. Prior to her return, her sister disclosed in an interview that Polman was coping with post-traumatic stress disorder and other difficulties.
The woman’s sibling, who requested anonymity when speaking to The Canadian Press in 2021, revealed that Polman had connected with an ISIS member online, leading to their marriage. However, their relationship soured, and she later distanced herself from the extremist group.
Polman was scheduled to face trial on two counts starting on November 9, but a date for her sentencing has not yet been arranged.
