ABC Drops Glenn McGrath as Commentator Amid Betting Firm Association

Published:

Glenn McGrath, a renowned Australian cricket icon, has been removed as a commentator by the primary broadcaster ABC due to his association with a betting firm. With an impressive record of 563 wickets in 124 Test matches for Australia, McGrath has been a dominant force against England in the Ashes series, clinching six victories with the Australian team.

While he will no longer serve as a pundit and commentator for ABC, McGrath will maintain his presence on the BBC Test Match Special. Despite being featured in promotional material for ABC’s Ashes coverage initially, McGrath has been excluded just before the series commences.

In a statement to the Guardian, ABC disclosed the mutual decision to part ways with Glenn McGrath for this Ashes series. The broadcaster expressed optimism about potential future collaborations with McGrath while highlighting their current commentary team’s readiness for the upcoming test in Perth.

The separation stems from McGrath’s impending partnership with the betting giant Bet365, mirroring a past occurrence involving former Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson. McGrath, set to play a significant role in the BBC’s Ashes coverage alongside notable personalities, has boldly predicted a 5-0 victory for the home team, citing Australia’s formidable bowling lineup and England’s historical struggles in Australian conditions.
