An AC/DC concert that was set to take place on September 16 at Rogers Stadium has been called off due to extensive damage caused by a recent storm, according to Live Nation. In an announcement made on Wednesday, Live Nation stated that the outdoor venue, with a capacity of 50,000, is currently unsuitable for hosting the concert due to safety concerns for attendees, staff, artists, and vendors.
Following a severe storm that occurred a week ago, engineers, in collaboration with the City of Toronto, have assessed the venue and identified areas that require removal and reconstruction. All original ticket holders for the cancelled event will receive full refunds through Ticketmaster, while those who purchased resale tickets are advised to contact their point of sale for refund details.
The decision to cancel the concert comes after the City of Toronto issued a directive to Live Nation Canada, the operator of Rogers Stadium, to address the safety concerns at the venue following an inspection on September 3. Live Nation Canada was given until September 8 to submit a detailed report outlining the damages and repair timeline, which the city confirmed receiving on Wednesday.
Wayne Zronik, Live Nation Canada’s president of business operations, expressed regret over the cancellation, acknowledging the disappointment it may cause to fans eagerly anticipating the event. Emphasizing the importance of safety, Zronik stated that the necessary steps to rebuild the affected areas of the stadium are essential to ensure a safe environment for fans in the upcoming season.
Kevin Mahoney, the on-site meteorologist at Rogers Stadium, mentioned a suspected microburst with extreme winds and heavy rainfall during the storm. Live Nation assured that the venue is subjected to strict safety inspections and operational oversight, with engineers collaborating closely with the city on the ongoing remediation efforts.
In the aftermath of the storm, aerial images revealed damaged bright blue bleachers and partially collapsed grandstands at the stadium. The city’s order highlighted various structural damages, including collapsed sections, damaged seating areas, and compromised temporary structures, along with other equipment being affected by the high winds.
The severe weather event, which caused widespread destruction, resulted in power outages, flooding, and damage to surrounding areas. Live Nation Canada described the storm as causing significant harm to the stadium on the night it occurred.
