The UK’s most influential Black individuals have been announced by the Powerlist 2026, recognizing those of African, African Caribbean, and African American descent who wield significant influence in the country.
Leading the rankings is Afua Kyei, the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director of the Bank of England. Kyei, a prominent finance leader, is responsible for overseeing financial governance of the £1 trillion balance sheet, spearheading funding reforms, and managing critical national infrastructure upgrades for Payments. She is also a strong advocate for diversity and climate disclosure.
Expressing her gratitude, Kyei stated, “It is a tremendous honor to be ranked at the top of the Powerlist in its 20th year. Being acknowledged alongside numerous exceptional individuals, both past and present, is truly humbling. This recognition is not just about personal accomplishments but about representation, visibility, and inspiring potential. I am particularly pleased that someone from the public sector and financial services is being celebrated in this manner.”
“When young individuals witness themselves represented in environments where they may not have previously envisioned belonging, it alters their perception of what they can achieve. I aspire that my journey can motivate others to pursue their aspirations, chase their passions, and believe in their ability to reach the pinnacle of success.”
“The Powerlist has served as a guiding light for two decades, and I am honored to be part of that enduring legacy.”
Following closely on the list is Ian Wright, a former England and Arsenal footballer who has transitioned into a pundit and advocate for equity in sports. Alongside Kyei and Wright in the top 10 are influential personalities like Dame Pat McGrath, a renowned makeup artist and founder of the multi-billion-pound brand Pat McGrath Labs.
Among the top 10 are also entrepreneur and Dragon’s Den investor Steven Bartlett, actor, filmmaker, and philanthropist Idris Elba OBE, CEO and Co-Founder of Good American and Founding Partner of SKIMS Emma Grede, and Ije Nwokorie, the Chief Executive Officer of Dr Martens.
The 20th anniversary of the Powerlist celebrates leaders and innovators who have significantly impacted society by dismantling barriers, redefining success, and inspiring future generations. The honorees will be commemorated at the Powerlist 2026 and Celebration of Black Excellence Awards at The Grosvenor House Hotel in London, jointly hosted by Jeanette Kwakye MBE and Tim Campbell MBE.
Michael Eboda, CEO of Powerful Media Ltd, remarked, “When we introduced the Powerlist back in 2006, our objective was simple – to spotlight role models whose achievements could motivate others. The evolution over the last two decades has exceeded our wildest expectations. It has enhanced visibility, altered perceptions, and, most importantly, demonstrated to young Black individuals that there are no limits to what they can accomplish. To have Afua Kyei at Number 1 on this 20th anniversary feels particularly impactful – she embodies the leadership, resilience, and vision that the Powerlist was established to commend.”
