American climber Mallory Geis found deceased in Pakistan avalanche

Published:

Search teams have located the body of Mallory Geis, an American climber who was the final missing member of a 10-person international mountaineering group that perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago. The discovery was made by local volunteers, as confirmed by Irfan Arshad Khan, the president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s inaugural endeavor to summit an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.

A resident of San Antonio, Texas, Geis, aged 39, had shared on social media earlier this year her decision to close her Pilates studio and embark on “a significant leap into the unknown to explore life’s possibilities.” Her family described her as a radiant presence who was deeply cherished by her loved ones.

The search operation, initiated on July 31 following the tragic incident that engulfed the expedition led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja, has now concluded with Geis’s recovery. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a Nepali climber and former British Army soldier, gained fame for conquering the world’s 14 highest peaks in a record-breaking 189 days in 2019, a feat showcased in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” His record was surpassed in 2023.

Tragic accidents are not uncommon during climbing endeavors in the northern regions of Pakistan due to hazards such as avalanches, falling ice and rocks, extreme altitudes, and unpredictable weather conditions.
