A family in Toronto is heartbroken as their cherished pet bunny, Biscuit, disappeared during the annual Markham Fair, leading both the family and fair officials to suspect foul play.
Biscuit, a fluffy Holland Lop rabbit owned by Victoria McClelland’s family, vanished after winning first place at the fair recently. McClelland expressed her devastation upon receiving a call informing them that Biscuit was possibly taken from his enclosure.
The family eagerly anticipates the Markham Fair each year, with McClelland’s daughter excited to showcase Biscuit in the rabbit show. Winning first prize was a joyous moment, but their happiness turned to sorrow when they discovered Biscuit missing from his cage on Sunday.
McClelland lamented the loss, emphasizing the deep bond her daughter shared with Biscuit, referring to him as more than just a pet but a cherished family member.
Following the incident, the Markham and East York Agricultural Society released a statement expressing disappointment over the theft of an animal entered by a young girl. They assured that the safety and welfare of all animals at the fair are paramount and are reviewing security measures to prevent similar occurrences.
Fair organizers suspect that Biscuit was deliberately taken from his cage, as it was found securely closed from the outside. Devin King, the president of Markham Fair, disclosed that staff noticed Biscuit missing after someone closed the cage door overnight.
King emphasized the dedication of exhibitors and volunteers in making the fair possible and confirmed efforts to enhance security, including the installation of additional surveillance cameras. The York police are actively investigating the theft.
McClelland pleaded for Biscuit’s safe return, urging the responsible party to bring him back. Her daughter echoed the sentiment, expressing a deep desire to have Biscuit home again.
