“Bengio Leads $250M Investment to Develop Safe AI”

Published:

Artificial intelligence poses a potential existential threat, according to Yoshua Bengio, a prominent figure in AI technology. To combat this menace, Bengio, alongside Canadian and German government representatives, revealed a substantial investment exceeding $250 million. The funding aims to support Bengio’s creation of Scientist AI, a novel AI model engineered for safety and objectivity rather than self-serving objectives.

The Canadian government is injecting $150 million into LawZero, a Montreal-based non-profit established by Bengio. This marks the company’s first federal funding, with an additional 100 million euros pledged by Germany. The ultimate goal is to develop AI technologies that prioritize safety and responsibility.

Bengio’s urgency stems from a desire to secure a future for upcoming generations, as emphasized during the All In conference in Montreal. Recent warnings, including one from a departing researcher at Anthropic, have heightened concerns about AI’s potential catastrophic impacts. Prime Minister Mark Carney has also advocated for global oversight to mitigate AI risks.

Evan Solomon, the Artificial Intelligence Minister, views the investment in LawZero as part of Canada’s commitment to fostering responsible AI development. Despite the challenges posed by existing powerful AI systems, experts believe in the necessity of designing safer alternatives. The recent collaboration between Canada and Germany underscores the importance of international partnerships in navigating the AI landscape.

Furthermore, the merger between Canadian company Cohere and German firm Aleph Alpha signifies a strategic move towards bolstering capabilities and fostering collaboration among like-minded nations. Vass Bednar, from the Canadian Shield Institute think-tank, views such partnerships as essential for capacity building and innovation in the AI sector.

In the face of evolving AI technologies, experts stress the importance of proactive measures and international cooperation to steer AI development towards a safer and more responsible path. Yoshua Bengio remains resolute in his mission to drive positive change through AI advancements, underscoring the collective responsibility to shape a better future for humanity.
