“British Columbia Families Struggle with Back-to-School Costs”

Published:

Families in British Columbia are feeling the financial strain as the new school year approaches, with many turning to donations to help prepare their children. Swati Chakraborty recently attended a nonprofit event to gather school supplies where her son picked items reflecting his personality. This marks the second year in a row that Chakraborty has sought assistance for back-to-school needs, a process her child now eagerly anticipates.

Enrolling her son in affordable extracurricular activities is a continuous challenge due to limited availability and high demand, according to Chakraborty. The Salvation Army’s Boundless Vancouver program hosted a back-to-school event, offering supplies to approximately 200 families, but still struggled to meet the rising demand, as reported by corps officer Tamara Randlesome.

Nonprofit organizations have observed a growing need for support leading up to each school year, with even dual-income households increasingly seeking aid from services like the Salvation Army. Statistics Canada revealed a 24% increase in the prices of school textbooks and supplies between June 2015 and June 2026.

Research conducted by the University of British Columbia (UBC) over the past two decades has shown a connection between early childhood development and access to economic resources. Children from higher-income families tend to have more Positive Assets and Childhood Experiences (PACEs), such as adequate sleep, nutrition, physical activity, reading, and play, which contribute to their overall development.

Madison Perreault, a student in Surrey, initiated a project to collect and donate school supplies to Indigenous teenagers in her community. Perreault, who often went to school without basic supplies, raised over 70 kits containing essential items like notebooks, paper, and stationery. Her initiative has garnered support from community members, including a mother who shared her experience of struggling to afford school supplies for her children in the past but now wants to give back.

As families navigate the financial challenges of preparing for the school year, community efforts like Perreault’s project and nonprofit assistance play a crucial role in supporting those in need.
