Ben LeSage scored the first try, propelling Canada’s men’s rugby team to a thrilling 19-16 victory over the United States in the Pacific Nations Cup, securing third place. Mason Flesch and Jesse Kilgour also contributed tries for Canada.
Takoda McMullin successfully converted LeSage and Kilgour’s tries in the 11th and 60th minutes. This achievement marks Canada’s best finish since 2014, where they placed third, and 2013, where they secured second place.
The tournament’s final saw Japan emerge victorious over Fiji, with Samoa and Tonga also competing. Canada’s strong performance began with LeSage’s early try in the 10th minute, followed by a well-executed play that led to Flesch scoring his third try of the tournament.
Despite a comeback by the United States, with prop Fakaosifolau Pifeleti scoring and Luke Carty converting, Canada maintained their lead. The match remained intense as Carty’s penalty kicks kept the United States close on the scoreboard.
In a crucial moment in the 59th minute, Flesch’s powerful play set up Kilgour for his first career try, with McMullin converting to reclaim the lead. The United States narrowed the gap with another penalty kick by Carty, but Canada’s resilient defense secured the victory in the final moments, with Lucas Rumball’s crucial play ensuring the 19-16 win for Canada.
