Households across the country are being encouraged to apply for a £100 grant as part of the Household Support Fund, aimed at assisting low-income families with essential expenses like food, energy, and water.
The fund, administered by local councils, offers various forms of aid such as vouchers or direct cash payments, depending on the council’s discretion.
City of York Council has alerted residents that over 2,000 eligible individuals have yet to claim their £100 support payment for this season, which is disbursed directly to bank accounts and does not require repayment, with eligibility linked to receiving council tax assistance.
Nearly 5,000 residents in York qualify for this benefit, with letters already dispatched by the council containing application instructions, including the submission of a recent bank statement showing essential details. The deadline to claim the grant is November 23, 2025.
Cllr Katie Lomas, from the City of York Council, emphasized the importance of claiming the fund before the deadline, highlighting that the money, provided by the government, serves as crucial financial aid, especially during the current cost of living challenges.
For those outside of York, it’s advisable to inquire with their local council about similar support programs. For instance, Portsmouth City Council is granting £150 to single-person households and £200 to couples or families meeting specific income criteria.
To be eligible, individuals must receive certain benefits and maintain household incomes below specified thresholds, with the fund aiming to provide vital assistance during challenging economic times.
