“Cold Snap Hits UK: Snowfall and Freezing Temperatures Expected”

Published:

Temperatures in the UK took a sharp drop this weekend, falling below the usual levels for this time of year, with the likelihood of snowfall in certain regions. This coincides with the end of British Summer Time (BST) as clocks were set back to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) during the early hours.

The Met Office had previously cautioned about a cold and changeable period ahead, with Sunday’s forecast indicating another cold day. The day is expected to start cool but dry across the UK, with some frost in parts of England and northern Scotland. However, there are predictions of clouds and rain moving from the northwest towards the southeast by the evening.

Overnight from Saturday to Sunday, light snow showers were reported in the Scottish Highlands, with a mix of snow and rain expected on Sunday, potentially reaching 500 to 700 meters. The temperatures are anticipated to stay below freezing, particularly in mountainous regions of England and Wales.

According to weather models from WXCharts, snow is likely to persist in the Scottish Highlands until 3pm on Sunday. The cold snap is attributed to Storm Benjamin, which triggered yellow weather warnings across the country.

The Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Chris Bulmer, highlighted the impact of Storm Benjamin on the UK’s weather patterns, mentioning the arrival of cold Arctic air leading to a notably chilly weekend with temperatures below average. Despite dry weather in many areas with some sunshine, the brisk northerly winds will bring cold conditions, with showers, possibly snowfall, in northern and western regions.

Looking ahead, the forecast for Monday to Wednesday suggests ongoing variability with occasional rain or showers, especially in the northwest. The weather is expected to be driest and sunniest towards the southeast, with temperatures gradually returning to near average levels. From Thursday, October 30 to Saturday, November 8, the forecast indicates an unsettled start, with rain showers expected in many areas. The weather will remain changeable and unsettled, with a risk of heavy rain and strong winds in some places. However, temperatures are anticipated to be around normal or slightly above for that time of year.
