Dan Evans Contemplates Team Exit After Davis Cup Snub

Published:

British tennis player Dan Evans expressed his frustration in 2022 over being excluded from the doubles event in the Davis Cup, leading him to contemplate leaving the team. Despite his successful history in the Davis Cup, Evans felt slighted by the selection decision that left him out of the doubles matches.

In an interview with the i, Evans voiced his disappointment and perceived insult at not being chosen for the doubles matches, emphasizing that his lack of regular doubles play on the tour should not discount his abilities. He argued that selection for the Davis Cup should consider playing styles rather than just doubles rankings.

Following his absence from the 2021 Davis Cup Finals doubles matches, where he was only involved in singles matches, Evans expressed his confusion and frustration at not being given the opportunity to compete in the doubles event. He hinted at reconsidering his future participation in the Davis Cup if the situation persisted.

Despite his concerns, Evans eventually had the chance to showcase his doubles skills alongside Neal Skupski in a successful match against Colombia the following year. However, his participation in the 2023 Davis Cup Finals was cut short due to an injury.

In other Davis Cup news, the 2025 Finals saw Britain eliminated in the qualifying round by Japan. Italy advanced to the semi-finals with Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli leading the charge, defeating Austria. Berrettini and Cobolli’s victories secured Italy’s spot in the last four, setting up a showdown against Belgium in the next round.
