After almost three decades, a woman, identified as Mirella, was rescued in a critical condition, close to death, from a confined space where she had allegedly been kept by her parents. Mirella disappeared at 15 years old in 1998 and had not left her family’s residence until her recent discovery.
Police found Mirella in a severely weakened state with life-threatening injuries, prompting immediate medical attention. The woman’s parents had reportedly misled the community about her disappearance, claiming she was kidnapped. However, a police investigation uncovered the grim truth in their home in Świętochłowice, Poland.
Concerns arose when neighbors reported hearing disturbances from the apartment where Mirella was found. Despite initial reassurances from her and her elderly landlady, the severity of Mirella’s condition became evident when police noticed her untreated wounds and rushed her to the hospital.
It was revealed that during her captivity, Mirella had not received proper medical care, never visited a dentist, and was deprived of basic liberties like going outside or grooming. She had been confined to a small room by her parents, isolating her completely from the world.
Photos obtained from the apartment show a frozen-in-time environment where Mirella spent the majority of her life, surrounded by remnants of her childhood. Her mother acknowledged past outings with Mirella but struggled to recall specifics, including the last time they went out.
Despite being saved by the authorities, Mirella’s road to recovery remains challenging. A criminal investigation has been initiated, although the legal consequences for her parents are yet to be determined.
Neighbors expressed shock at the revelation, recalling the false narrative of Mirella’s disappearance that had been perpetuated for years. However, authorities have stated that there is no evidence suggesting Mirella was forcibly held, pending further investigation.
