“Defending Champ Henderson Close Behind Leader in CPKC Women’s Open”

Published:

Brooke Henderson, the defending champion hailing from Smiths Falls, Ontario, is in contention at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton. Henderson, aiming for her third victory in Canada’s LPGA tournament, carded a solid second-round 68 on Friday, finishing at 5-under par. As the tournament progresses, Henderson is trailing the clubhouse leader Soo Bin Joo of South Korea by four strokes, with Joo sitting at 9 under at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton.

Henderson was cruising at 7 under before encountering a couple of back-nine bogeys, one of which led her tee shot to veer left and accidentally hit a spectator. She promptly apologized to the woman and offered her a golf ball as a gesture of goodwill.

Aphrodite Deng from Calgary, who was the top amateur in last year’s tournament in Mississauga, Ontario, wrapped up her round with consecutive birdies to finish at 3 under with a 67.

The cut-off at the $2.75-million US event is for the top 65 players and those tied with them. Canadian teenagers Anna Huang from Vancouver and Michelle Xing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, who began the day at 5 under, had their tee times scheduled for the afternoon session.
