Tennis icon Novak Djokovic has expressed concerns regarding Jannik Sinner’s doping case and subsequent suspension earlier this year. The Italian player accepted a three-month ban after testing positive for an anabolic steroid in 2024.
Initially, Sinner was cleared of wrongdoing as it was determined that the positive tests resulted from contamination during a massage. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) found no fault on Sinner’s part for the incident in March 2024.
The ITIA defended its handling of Sinner’s case last year and refuted claims of preferential treatment. Subsequently, Sinner reached an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency after their challenge to the initial decision.
Following his suspension from February to May this year, Sinner was able to compete at the French Open due to the timing of the ban. Djokovic, who lost to Sinner at the French Open and Wimbledon, shared his thoughts on the matter during a discussion with Piers Morgan.
Djokovic mentioned his shock at the situation, emphasizing his belief that Sinner did not intend to cheat. However, he criticized the handling of the case, pointing out red flags such as lack of transparency and the convenient timing of the ban.
In a broader context, Djokovic reflected on his own controversies, particularly regarding his stance on vaccination during the pandemic. He clarified that he supported freedom of choice in the matter.
Meanwhile, Sky has announced a discount on its Essential TV and Sky Sports package for the upcoming season, offering over 1,400 live matches, including at least 215 Premier League games.
