“EE Customers Warned of Text Message Scam”

Published:

EE customers are being warned about a resurgence of a text message scam targeting them for their “EE reward points.” The fraudulent messages prompt recipients to click on a link to claim their points before they expire, leading to a fake EE website. Despite the appearance of legitimacy, the scheme is designed to extract personal information and money from unsuspecting victims. Incidents of this scam have been on the rise recently.

Some EE users have shared their experiences on online forums to alert others. One user mentioned receiving a deceptive text regarding rewards and highlighted the need for caution. Another user admitted falling for the scam momentarily but quickly realized the ruse and closed the website.

According to cybersecurity company Phonely, there has been a notable increase in reports of this scam being sent from random numbers pretending to be EE. Phonely advises mobile users to exercise vigilance when receiving unexpected messages about rewards or prizes.

Bryn Thompson, the Marketing Director at Phonely, emphasized the deceptive nature of these texts and warned against clicking on any links in such messages. He urged people to verify with their mobile provider directly using official contact information if they have doubts.

EE has clarified that they do not operate a points or rewards program and has shared an example of the fraudulent message to help customers identify it. The company reiterated the importance of ignoring such messages and refraining from clicking on any embedded links.

The misleading text typically informs recipients about expiring points and urges them to click a link to redeem prizes promptly. EE reiterated that the message is fraudulent and advised recipients not to engage with it or provide any personal or financial details.

To safeguard against falling victim to such scams, EE customers are advised to avoid clicking on links in messages related to reward points and to refrain from sharing personal information.
